An Important Part Of Maintaining A Happy Partnership Is Being In Touch With Who You Are And What You Really Like
This sentence was the subject of a spirited song from the earlier days of rock and roll by a singer who called himself, The Big Bopper. It was named “Chantilly Lace”. In the song, the Big Bopper (Jay Perry Richardson) describes in this baritone voice how his young girlfriend walks and speaks and dresses and how much her childish actions please him and make him act giddy. The words of the melody are really wild. He says, “Ain’t nothin’ in the world like a big-eyed girl to make me act so funny, make me spend my money, make me feel real loose, like a long-neck goose, like a girl. Oh baby, that’s what I like!”
I had not ever heard of chantilly lace but it certainly seemed to turn this guy on. It makes one ponder why human beings love what they love. My brother often utilizes this Latin expression from ancient times, “de gustibus non est disputandum”. It means, “in matters of taste there is no accounting.” After all these many years, isn’t that the truth and isn’t it a great thing?
Did you ever find a person to be extremely exciting to you and, for the life of you, you can’t sort out why? Perhaps they were not attractive in the common sense (symmetry of attributes, clear skin, etc.) but you still found them extremely appealing.
On the other hand, have you ever seen the finalists in a beauty contest and not found any of them to be particularly appealing? The wonderful news is, we don’t have to give reasons for why we like a thing or do not like it. It’s merely a matter of taste and doesn’t have to live up to anybody else’s expectations.
Here is one more interesting truth; being aware of what you love is a big part of acknowledging who you are. If you share everything you love with other people, you’re permitting others to get to know you. It also permits them to know how to please you should they ever feel so inclined. They could give you what you like one day. Do not worry whether what you like is not what someone else will like. As long as you don’t insist that what you like is accurate or superior to what others like, no one will have a problem with discovering what your preferences are. Analyzing what you like and expressing that to others has another advantage. It makes you feel happy.
That is one of the reasons why I like the Big Bopper’s song. It makes me smile. He so shamelessly KNEW what he liked and he did not mind reiterating it three times in the song!
